interesting or confusing about people's media usage. Develop a list of 5-6 questions. Most
surveys are comprised of closed-ended questions, or those for which all possible answers are
provided. A simple closed-ended question invites a simple "yes" or "no" as an answer. A
Likert scale question invites participants to choose along a continuum-from "strongly
agree" to "strongly disagree," for example, and often with five or seven choices.

Surveys are questionnaires that are administered to a sample of respondents selected from a
target population. You have probably participated in survey research, if you responded to the
last U.S. Census, or if you've offered your views to a pollster or market researcher.
What Was It Really Like at Woodstock? You could use many different methodologies to
investigate this question, including interviews, surveys, existing sources, or experiments.
In this step, you will develop two essential parts of survey research: a sample, and a set of
questions to include in your survey.
Who will respond to your survey? You may want to focus on one group of people, such as
student athletes, music majors, or women. A sample includes the members of the target
population who will be included in your study. For example, if your target population is
college seniors, you will need to recruit 5-8 college seniors who will comprise your sample. In
quantitative research, social scientists often use probability sampling or simple random
sampling, both of which involve mathematical techniques that reduce bias by giving each
member of the target population an equal chance to be included. In this study, you will
simply ask members of the target population to take your survey, a quicker approach to
generating a sample.
