Question

Background: Russell Jones, director of a recreational equipment retail outlet, Mountain Recreational Equipment (MRE), announces that the corporate office wants each local retail store location to develop a persuasive proposal highlighting their ideas for community service projects for the following year. Every year the employees at MRE devote substantial time raising money and partnering with local charities. In the past, the employees at each store have decided what charitable organizations/activities they want to support independently of the corporate office, so the request for proposals and approval is a notable change to the initiative.

Jones explains to his team that the MRE Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jennifer Munoz, feels that the company is straying too far from the corporate image in what employees are choosing to support. For example, locations are selecting fundraising and partnership projects that vary dramatically in scope and purpose. The CEO has decided this new directive will encourage everyone to pursue more sports – or fitness – related activities that better fit with the company’s vision and mission. The CEO also wants site locations to think more strategically about how their social investment/community partnerships/fundraising initiatives align with the company’s vision and mission, to sell recreational equipment. Munoz also communicated that it is important to show company employees living active and healthy lifestyles as well as helping their communities.

Jones suggests that the group brainstorm some ideas and see what most people are in favor of doing. He points out that once the group has selected a few projects, they will have to submit a written proposal to the CEO to persuade her that the selected community initiatives are a strategic fit for MRE and will benefit the overall company. He explains that the CEO wants a written proposal with their top three choices for possible service projects so that she can give feedback to and ensure that the selection aligns with the company’s goals.

MRE VISION STATEMENT:

To inspire, educate, and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and healthy living.

Part 1: Persuasive Business Proposal

Assignment: Take on the persona of one member of the MRE Social Responsibility Team and on behalf of the team, write a proposal describing three possible service projects that employees could undertake for the following year. This rhetorical situation is not set in any particular region, so locate it in your area and develop three ideas that are appropriate to your location and align with the company’s vision and mission. (Be sure to select ideas that are related to outdoors, environment, sports, and/or recreational activities, as requested by the company president.)

AUDIENCE: Direct your proposal to Jennifer Munoz, CEO of MRE. Consider your audience analysis.

Include TWO scholarly sources (from within the last 5 years) that highlight the benefit of social responsibility initiatives to a company (think employee engagement, brand recognition, company reputation, increased morale, financial impact, recruitment efforts, etc.). Use APA formatting for citations.

Use all available resources to research your three initiatives so that you can clearly and completely describe them in your proposal.

Audience: Jennifer Munoz, CEO, of MRE
