provide a response to the following paragraph "The death penalty is not about whether people deserve to die for the crimes they commit. The real question of capital punishment in this country is, Do we deserve to kill?”(Byran Stevenson, Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption). In America, the death penalty has been used to convict offenders who have disregarded society’s moral obligation to protect the welfare/safety of its citizens by committing a serious crime. The death penalty is a form of capital punishment that puts a criminal to death due to their actions or convictions. As a result, the death penalty have been an ongoing issue that have sparked many debates and protests across the world. In my opinion there are many reasons why the death penalty should be abolished in the United States. The death penalty should be abolished due to its high cost, discrimination towards minorities, and hypocrisy. The different ways of execution regarding the death penalty includes, beheading, hanging, lethal injection, or the firing squad. Each of these executions are cruel, traumatic, and tortuous. . As of which, the death penalty is morally incorrect. If society feels like murder is the utmost evil acts an individual could committ, then how could it be justified to punish an individual with the same exact tactic, that was condemned. As stated in the United States Constitution, every individual has a right of life, liberty, and property. Therefore, deciding whether on not someone lives or dies due to their actions, would be considered a violation of the constitution. The high cost for executions and deciding capital punishment is another reason why the death penalty should be abolished. A 1993 study found that capital trials in North Carolina are significantly more costly than noncapital trials and, when comparing the cost of incarceration on death row for ten years, found that it was less costly than regular imprisonment for twenty years. This proves that, the death penalty compared to life imprisonment are a much greater expense for a death penalty trial and imprisonment, rather than a life sentence. To add on, a Duke study founded that death penalty cases cost $2.1 million more than cases seeking life imprisonment. Abolishing the death penalty could not only save money for America but also improve America’s prison systems by using that money to fund for mental health services, vocational training, or rehabiliation resources. Lastly, discrimination towards minorities is another reason why the death penalty should be abolished. As minorities continue to overrepresent not only the prison systems but also death row, they are most likely to be executed as well. Seiter also writes, “Fifty-six percent were white and 42 percent were black, and 14 percent were Hispanic, but included in white and black figures”. This shows that minorities are socioeconomically and racially discriminated towards, leading to less privileges and a higher chance of being sentenced to death.
