Below are some of the common reactions of aldehydes and ketones that are used as
classification tests of these two functional groups.
1.
Reaction with Arylhydrazines
Of the several ammonia derivatives, phenylhydrazine and 2,4-dinitrophenylhy-
drazine are the most widely used as reliable tests for aldehydes and ketones. Any
compound suspected of being an aldehyde or ketone should therefore be tested
with one of these reagents. For water-soluble aldehydes and ketones, 2,4-dinitro-
phenylhydrazones are the preferred derivatives.
