How and why does America become an English colony, as opposed to Spanish or French?
In the 1400s, the European powers wanted to find new sources of wealth and power and began their exploration of the world, giving rise to the "Age of Exploration." As European powers competed to find new trading routes, they discovered some unknown places. The discovery of the Americas by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus brought many European powers to the new world. European powers like the English, the French, and the Spanish struggled to lay their claim on the newly discovered lands. After long conflict and struggle, the English were able to colonize America.
