True or False: Women made up half of Atlanta's Black workforce in the 1870s.
In 1861, a four-year war had begun in America. This was the civil war that had sprung between the Southern states and the Northern States. The ability of the federal government to forbid slavery in the regions that had not yet become states was a source of fierce disagreement between the free and slave states. After the civil war ended, thousands of emancipated people eager to switch from the relative seclusion of rural farm life to the social opportunities of the city were drawn to Atlanta after the Civil War. Blacks from the countryside flooded Atlanta between 1860 and 1870 in search of employment.
