Units for permeability are (cm³ cm/cm² s atm), whereby a given volume of permeant (cm³)
moves through a specified cross-sectional area of polymer (cm²), which is of a given thickness
(cm), in a certain time interval (s) with a defined pressure driving force (atm) across that polymer
thickness. See Coursepack Table B-11 for how to convert solubility values to units of
mol/(m's'atm).

Transcribed Image Text:Problem 4 Hospitals routinely use translucent, plastic bags to introduce water, salt, sugar, and
drugs to patients intravenously. Some of the drugs are not stable in the presence of high oxygen
levels, when exposed to light. Therefore, it is important that the IV bag have very low oxygen
permeability. One such bag is made of a multilayered film that includes 5 different polymer
layers. The layers include a Nylon outer layer (40 µm thick layer), Admer tie layer (10 µm),
EVOH barrier layer (16 µm), a second Admer tie layer (10 µm), and LDPE layer (90 µm). The
Nylon is added for mechanical strength, the EVOH for oxygen barrier properties, LDPE for
material compatibility reasons, and tie layers to
hold the other polymer layers together. Nylon is
the outer layer exposed to air, LDPE is the
material in contact with fluids in the IV bag, and
the IV bag is initially devoid of oxygen. The
permeabilites, solubilities and diffusivities for
oxygen through the layers are given below (ignore
any variation with temperature). Determine the
initial molar flux of oxygen through the listed
5-layer film and compare that to the flux through
a 3-layer film that only includes Nylon, Admer,
and LDPE layers of similar thickness.
