If water is in contact with ice cubes then ice cubes can absorb the heat from water thereby cooling it from within. Moreover, water expands on cooling which makes it easier for heat to transfer due to decreased resistance to heat transfer. since the heat transfer is reduced the more amount of inter energy in form of heat is transferred to ice cubes which are in contact.
