In this week, we cover Business Processes, including Process Improvement through streamlining and re-engineering and process modeling of both the As-Is and the To-Be processes. Students were asked: Drawing from your own experience, select a process (a set of specified steps to accomplish a task) used at your place of work or in an interaction with a business that you would like to see improved and briefly describe the process. Be sure you have identified a specific process rather than a general business problem or area. Explain why you picked that process. Explain the steps you might take to analyze how to improve the process. Who should be involved with you? What are some of the questions you should ask about the current process? How will you know if the process was actually improved? The student answered I work at a mid-sized ophthalmology practice. When patients show severe symptoms like rapid decreased vision or/and glare due to cataracts, it allows us to set them up for a surgery evaluation. A surgery evaluation is the first step in the long process towards cataract surgery. A business process is that is focused on achieving a goal for a business (Learning, n.d.). We have 2 surgeons at the practice, and each surgery brings about $5,000 in revenue. Since we have recently moved to a larger office, the manager wants us to increase patients and surgeries to maximize revenue. In order to increase patients, the process towards cataract surgery should be simplified. I am choosing to write about this process because I believe it will not only benefit my current organization, but also others who may use a similar process.  The current process Patient schedules Cataract Evaluation with Call Center Patient comes in for a Cataract Surgery Evaluation Surgerical Coordinator conducts the appropriate eye measurements needed for the doctors Patient is handed off to the technician, who will go over patient demographics and conduct the preliminary exam Once preliminary exam is completed, the Surgical Coordinator goes into the exam room to go over preoperative procedures and any questions/concerns the patient may have Doctor then examines patient to see if they are ready for surgery Surgery coordinator steps back in to schedule patient for surgery (if applicable) As one could see, this process is lengthy and the patient jumps between multiple hands. The process of Business Reengineering takes fully understanding the goals of a process and then dramatically redesigning it from the ground up to achieve jaw-dropping improvements in productivity and quality (Learning, n.d.). With the patient shuffling between many people, it can also be seen as unprofessional. When the patient is traveling and communicating between multiple people, it can cause miscommunication and confusion.  Business Process Reengineered Patient schedule Cataract Surgery Evaluation with the Surgery Coordinator This step will allow the patient to build a relationship with the surgery coordinator whereas just scheduling the appointment with a call center associate.  Patient comes in for the appointment Surgical Coordinator conducts measurements  Surgical Coordinator conducts preliminary examinations and goes over preoperative procedures and any questions/concerns the patient may have Surgical Coordinator (based off preliminary exam) schedules patient for surgery Doctor then examines patient to see if they are ready for surgery If a patient is dealing with surgery, everything should be handled with the Surgery Coordinator. It will improve patient flow and stress from other departments. This will also help organize any surgery information for the patient since communication will only be between patient and Coordinator. The Surgical Coordinator performs administrative duties relevant to surgical operations. Job requirements include surgery scheduling, appointment reminders, keeping patient records, entering post-surgical data and scheduling surgical equipment (Surgical, n.d.).  Question Assess whether the student's post accurately and sufficiently addresses the questions asked in the discussion topic.
