How to know from the table when the potato is hypo, hyper and isotonic from a table of mass changes?
The movement of solvent molecules from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration through a semi-permeable membrane is known as Osmosis.
If two solutions are compared to each other in terms of their solute concentration, the solution having lower concentration of solute molecules is known as Hypotonic solution, whereas the other one with higher solute concentration is said to be Hypertonic. However, if both the solution has equal solute concentration, then, it is said to be Isotonic in nature.
Depending on the absorbing or releasing amount of water, potato tissue exhibits a variation in their masses. With the change in their mass, one can detect the osmotic concentration within the living cell.
When a tissue is placed in a hypotonic solution, water molecules move from the outer environment to the inside of the cell, resulting in an increase in the mass of the cell and vice-versa.
