Expert Solution
Step 1

An enantiomeric mixture known as a racemic mixture has an equal proportion of (R)- and (S)-enantiomers. If a substance only contains one enantiomer or the other, it is said to be enantiomerically pure. An excess of either the enantiomer (R) or the enantiomer causes an enantiomeric excess (S). When there is an excess of either the (R)-enantiomer or the (S)-enantiomer, an enantiomeric excess arises. Another name for enantiomeric excess is optical purity.
