On June 14, 1645, Sir Thomas Fairfax led his men to victory over King Charles I at the Battle of Naseby. His victory secured Parliament's victory in the First English Civil War (1642-46) and insured that monarchs would never again be preeminent in British politics.
King Charles's shortage of funds was a major cause in the commencement of the Civil War. This meant that Charles would have to summon a new session of Parliament to levy further taxes. Parliament rejected King Charles's sufficient funds to conduct military expeditions against Spain and France.
Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Union soldiers surrendered less than 34 hours later. This event has traditionally been used to mark the start of the Civil War.
