How did city life function in Mesopatamia? What were its characteristics? What is a city state?
Mesopotamia or the land between flood plains of the Tigris and Euphrates was one of the earliest regions to host settled human life and later cities. By the turn of the third millennium BCE, these cities came to dominate the cultural, economic, and political aspects of society in Mesopotamia. Most of these cities were Sumerian speaking towards the south and Semitic speaking towards the Northwest. Some important ones were Ur, Uruk, Lagash, and Kish.
"City-State" is a term used by social science scholars to refer to a system of political organization in which power and authority are concentrated within a city and the city exerts influence over its surrounding countryside by collecting taxes, trade, enforcing its laws, and providing protection. This type of political organization continued in Mesopotamia for centuries until the rise of Sargon of Akkad in the 24th century BCE.
