The Abbasid Caliphate ruled the Middle East from 750 AD to 1258 AD. It was the third such ruling caliphate since the death of Prophet Muhammad. It was named so as it is believed to have descended from Abbas , one of the uncles of Prophet Muhammad. In a political revolution Abbasids overthrew the Ummayads and established themselves as the new rulers.
