Why is it difficult to use environmental genomics to
discover new biochemical properties?
Genomics is the study of gene arrangement and its expression pattern in an organism. Human genome comprises of 40,000 functions genes. Human genome project enables to decode the entire human genome identity and the gene type for specific diseases.
The main aim of environmental genomics is not to produce complete and finished genome sequences as followed for several cultured microorganism. Environmental genomics rather focus on detection of as many genes as possible which encoded identifiable proteins. Then later on if achievable the phylogeny of those organisms can be determined to which the genes belong. Environmental genomics is used to decipher the known metabolism of organism alone and not the new biochemical properties.
