Examine the type and impact of trade that began with the Columbian period. How did the creation of a global world impact global commerce and the global diet?
Such was the scale and intensity of the impact of the discovery of the Americas that the event led to a specific periodization of the history of the Americas. This periodization was named after the person who discovered the Americas, i.e, the first European in modern times to reach the Americas. This person was a Venetian explorer who under the Spanish flag reached an island in the Bahamas in 1492. The period of the history of the Americas before the arrival of Columbus is now referred to as the Pre-Columbian Period.
