Evaluate the legacy of the Vikings in world history
The Viking Age is generally considered to have begun in 793 AD with the raid on the Lindisfarne monastery in England. The Vikings, known for their brutal raids and pillaging activities across Europe, spared no settlements including monasteries, churches and towns. In addition to this destructive behavior they established their own thriving settlements - playing a pivotal role in shaping trade routes between Scandinavia and European regions.
The Vikings were motivated by a medley of factors such as overpopulation in Scandinavia, an insatiable desire for wealth and plunder and as well as the quest to discover new land. Possessing exceptional prowess in warfare: they triumphed over numerous armies that crossed their path.
Around the 11th century, several factors terminated the Viking Age: the Vikings' conversion to Christianity; Europe witnessed a rise in robust centralized states, and new military technologies emerged.
