Question
![Scheduling soccer practice five days a week between 5:30 and 8:00 PM is morally irresponsible.
Imagine a high school student who comes home to school after 3:00 PM. She needs to leave home
again at 5:00 to make it to practice on time. She has two hours during which to wind down, maybe
have a snack, and take a first shot at her homework. When she returns from practice, it is 9:00 PM. She
needs to shower, eat, and maybe she will be able to spend another hour studying. She might be able to
go to bed at 10:30, and get up at 6:30 AM if she is fortunate enough to live close to school. Assuming
she fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow, she might be able to stay awake in school with eight
hours of sleep.
Do the math: 2 1/2 hours minimum on sports, and 1 1/2 hours max on studying. This is the value system this coach is imposing
on our children. He is telling them that recreational pursuits are more important than fulfilling one's educational responsibilities.
No one in our educational system should be able to give this perverted moral message to the students.
