Ona was the daughter of one of the enslaved couple who used to work for President Washington. Ona's father was one of the laborers in the farm estate, and her mother was a housemaid for the Martha Washington.
When first lady Martha Washington shifted to her New York estate, she carried Ona with her as her housemaid and personal assistant. Their Ona used to perform daily chores of the household and accompany the first lady in her visits to the countryside.
