Expert Solution
Missouri Compromise
In 1819, the Union of America comprised of eleven slave state and eleven non-slave states thus, providing a balance in the senate. In 1820, Missouri, west of the Mississippi River, filed a petition to join the union as a slave state. This created a lot of debate in the Senate as it would have disturbed the balance of power between slave and non-slave state. It also created a debate around slavery. A compromise was finally reached in which Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine as a free state to maintain a balance. The compromise also banned slavery from the remaining Louisiana Purchase lands located north.
