Problem solving is, of course, the process used to find a solution to a given problem. But
how do you know what the problem is in the first place? As mentioned earlier, a
problem can be thought of as something that keeps you from achieving your goals.
Usually it is the result of some sort of stoppage or obstacle-something that gets in the
way of your progress-and you need to figure out a way to deal with it.
There are probably as many problem-solving approaches as there are problems. Figure 1
illustrates a general model of a problem-solving process, consisting of three main
phases- Problem Recognition, Problem Statement, and Solution-with detailed
analysis activities occurring to move from one phase to the next.
