Introduction

Distillation is the process of separating  the components or substances from a liquid mixture by using selective boiling and condensation. Distillation can result in essentially complete separation into almost pure components, or it may be a partial separation that increases the concentration of selected components in the mixture. In either case, the process exploits differences in the relative volatility of the mixture's components. Distillation is a unit operation of universal industrial importance. Classical distillation is a physical separation process and not a chemical reaction.

Distillation has many practical applications such as :

  • Production of  alcoholic beverages from fermented mass, or separation of other desired fermentation products
  • Desalination of saltwater.
  • Fractional distillation of crude oil in oil refineries for obtaining fuels and various petrochemical feedstocks.
  • Cryogenic distillation to separate air into its components such as oxygen, nitrogen , argon and rarer gases for commercial use.
