Consider the hydraulic lift shown in the figure. The small piston has an area Aj of 0.0330 m², and the large piston has an area A2 of 4.00 m². What force F, will the large piston provide if the small piston is pushed down with a force F of 18.0 N? Assume that the fluid used in the lift is incompressible. F2 = N F, y2 A, A, F, If the small piston Aj is slowly depressed a distance of y = 0.200 m, what distance y2 will the large piston A2 rise? y2 = m What is the magnitude W¡ of the work done when pushing down the small piston A1? What is the magnitude W, of the work done when pushing up the large piston A2? W1 = J W2 = J
Fluid Pressure
The term fluid pressure is coined as, the measurement of the force per unit area of a given surface of a closed container. It is a branch of physics that helps to study the properties of fluid under various conditions of force.
Gauge Pressure
Pressure is the physical force acting per unit area on a body; the applied force is perpendicular to the surface of the object per unit area. The air around us at sea level exerts a pressure (atmospheric pressure) of about 14.7 psi but this doesn’t seem to bother anyone as the bodily fluids are constantly pushing outwards with the same force but if one swims down into the ocean a few feet below the surface one can notice the difference, there is increased pressure on the eardrum, this is due to an increase in hydrostatic pressure.
