Commentator David Weinberger from NPR (25 Sept., 2000) realizes the current vogue in business is to "multitask," but argues that few do it, and no one does it well.  Excerpts from his piece are as follows: “You may be making toast, but you may also be talking on a phone, checking your email, listening to the radio, helping with homework... all that frantic activity is called multitasking, which means doing more than one thing at a time. (Multitasking means) we are managing to do several important things at once, and doing them well, but multitasking is impossible. Humans can only pay attention to one thing at a time... Multitasking just means rapid attention switching- a useful skill but there is a cost to switching attention. It takes humans a second or two to engage in a new situation that we have graced with our focus, but the sum total of attention is actually decreased as we multitask.  We lose some in the friction of switching focus. Slicing our attention is less like slicing a potato; and more like slicing a plum, we lose some of the juice. As we multitask more and more, we engage less and less, and we care less and less....”
