Johnny is a hardworking family man. He delivers food orders day and night while riding his bicycle.
His co-delivery boys tease him as the “Iron Man of Albay”, because he is so energetic and doesn’t seem to get tired easily. He even travels long distances on his bike.
One day, while eating at Aling Tess’ carinderia, which he patronizes, he was served with a meal he regularly orders. He was given a soup, few chunks of meat and its ‘sarsa’, two and a half cups of rice, and a banana. The extra one-half cup of rice was freely given to her by Aling Tess, teasing him that he might get emaciated from working very hard.
To that, Johnny responded that he isn’t fat. He never gets fat.
In the afternoon, on his way to deliver an order, Johnny got intercepted by a police traffic enforcer, Pat. Goyong Fernandez.
Johnny was alarmed. He was making up excuses on his mind on how to evade extortion, for he knew that he didn’t commit any traffic violation.
However, Goyong just wanted to check if he was wearing appropriate safety gear. As Johnny was departing, Goyong told him to take care. From that day on, they became friends.
Every time Johnny passes by that spot, he gestures, as if making a salute to Goyong.
One morning, he was surprised that Goyong wasn’t stationed at his usual spot.
All of a sudden, he heard someone from the back yelling at him. It was Goyong. He was riding a bike also. He said that it was his day off, and he wanted to spend the day exercising. He desperately wanted to lose some weight. His stomach keeps getting bigger and he is getting heavier. He also feels so sluggish. He feared that it might affect his duties as a patrolman.
But after a fifteen-minute ride, Goyong pulled to the side and was catching his breath. He drank a volume of water and ate his snack – a whopping four-layered ham sandwich. He even jokingly told Johnny how could he lose weight with this? He couldn’t sustain any physical activity.
Weeks have passed, and Aling Tess and Johnny’s co-delivery boys started noticing how Johnny got even slimmer.
Aling Tess has begun serving him one extra cup of rice for free, in every meal. She even gave him a discount to meat and vegetables orders.
Nonetheless, Johnny kept getting slimmer.
On a dark, chilly night, Johnny went ahead to deliver the last order for the day. He was surprised and speechless when the customer handed him over a box set of take-out meal. The customer said it was really for him – for his hard work.
Johnny pulled to the side of the sidewalk teary-eyed. His wife, telling him that their son got recovered from his sickness. Thanks to the money he sent them. He then narrated how a kind-hearted customer gave him a meal, and how he wished he could let his son taste it also. If only he could afford one for him.
