You have recently completed your Master’s degree in Industrial Psychology and have commenced your internship in hopes of becoming an Industrial Psychologist within the next year. Part of your training requires you to complete a component on Career Counselling and one of your assigned clients is 17-year-old Calihan. Calihan is not only an exceptional academic student (with his average being 90%), but he also performs exceptionally well in swimming. In fact, he is working towards participating in the 2024 Olympic games which will be held in London. Calihan is quite focussed on his swimming but he knows he will not be able to have a swimming career for the rest of his life. He has heard of the term “work as a central life interest” but is not too certain on what it means. He was thinking he might pursue a career in Sports Psychology as it links to his interest in the sports industry. However, he is not wanting to commit to working an 8:00-17:00, 5 days per week, office setting job. He wants a flexible working schedule as it will allow him to have more leisure time and also do some community work by coaching swimming to underprivileged individuals. Additionally, he would like to enter into a contemporary organisation. Even though he is focused on his training for the Olympics, he still depicts a sense of career motivation.
Questions
