Briefly explain Dalio's 'Puzzle Approach', then use Dalio’s ‘Puzzle’ approach to create ‘principles’ (these are essentially heuristics) to help you learn from this mistake and to not succumb to a similar one going forward?

Chapter 8 ends with a spotlight on legendary hedge fund manager Ray Dalio. After reading chapter 8, I would like you to view or read the transcript of this 2017 TEDTalk given by Ray Dalio:

  1. Dalio, R. (2017). How to Build a Company Where the Best Ideas Win [Video file]. Retrieved from https://www.ted.com/talks/ray_dalio_how_to_build_a_company_where_the_best_ideas_win/

The Transcipt can be found hereLinks to an external site.

There are a few different directions that we could go in regard to the TEDTalk, but after consuming the TEDTalk, please focus on the below:

  1. Identify a particular mistake that you made (remember to choose something appropriate and that you are comfortable sharing in our classroom and to which you are comfortable with people responding and possibly offering suggestions)
  2. Relate (multiple) concepts found in the chapter to uncover potential causes i.e. was the mistake rooted in a faulty attribution, misperception, emotional (un)intelligence, dysfunctional modeling, lack of reinforcement, (in)effective reinforcement scheduling, punishment, extinction, lack of tacit knowledge, etc.
  3. Briefly explain Dalio's 'Puzzle Approach', then use Dalio’s ‘Puzzle’ approach to create ‘principles’ (these are essentially heuristics) to help you learn from this mistake and to not succumb to a similar one going forward?
  4. Reflect upon this activity. Do you have a different viewpoint on the mistake and/or how to navigate something like it in the future? Are you likely to choose a different response than you would have before completing this activity?
  5. Add additional insight found.
  6. For your response post, we will take Ray Dalio’s supposition that Collective decision-making is ‘so much better’ than individual decision-making.
    •  Attempt Radical Transparency to offer cause-identification and solution to a classmate’s problem. Although, we are piggy-backing on Dalio’s Radical Transparency, we want to be reminded that were are in a safe, learning environment and to treat each other how they wish to be treated. Do not be rude, condescending, or non-constructive. The cause-identification will include material from the chapter.
