Introduction:

The B lymphocytes, which are antigenically activated, undergo blast transformation to become plasmablasts, intermediate transitional cells, and plasma cells. Plasma cells are responsible for synthesizing antibodies of a single specificity and a single immunoglobulin class (IgA, IgG, IgE, IgD & IgM), except in the first immune response where plasma cells initially manufacture IgM, which switches to IgG synthesis later. The antibody is formed like a 'Y'. The terms Immunoglobulins (Igs) and antibodies are used interchangeably.
