It will hurt a little bit at first, but as you get used to it the pain stops. Coming up the other way you use the back of your middle finger.” You can see a demonstration here. Calculate the magnitude of the force your thumb will exert on the piano keys while playing a glissando. Keep in mind that there will be a force down to keep the keys pressed and a force along to oppose the friction.
