ABC (Pvt) Ltd. is a reputed organization in manufacturing industry in Sri Lanka which produces baby toys. It has 1500 non-executive level employees and they are represented by two trade unions. Among those trade unions “Sewaka Handa Union”, owns the highest membership backed by a radical political party. Sewaka Handa had several discussions on demanding higher wages but was not received any favourable response from the management as company experience a drop in sales for the recent past. However, ignoring this awful situation of the company union officials have decided to engage in a trade union action and instructed their members to go on a strike with effect immediately even though the majority of members did not agreed. As instructed some of the members of Sewaka Handa went on a strike yet the other members who did not agreed to do the strike reported to work as normal. Also union threatened their members several times who have not engaged with the strike and influenced on some of the non-union members to join with the strike by explaining the situation through the meetings held in the company premises during the strike. As a result of that few of the non-union members also joined to the strike. Since the company has some urgent orders to be delivered, management requested from the strikers to report back to work promising that they will consider the request to increase the salary once the sales increase. However, union officials rejected the request made by company and continued the strike.
