A student wanted to test the effectiveness of a new type of drug that would increase the activity of Ca2+ ATPases on the sarcoplasmic reticulum. She had a population of 15 frogs and divided them into three groups: 5 frogs received 50mg of the drug, 5 frogs received 25mg of the drug and 5 frogs received a placebo. She isolated the gastrocnemius from each frog and attached it to a force transducer and collected data from single twitches. She also recorded the air temperature in Steinhaus Hall because temperature would affect enzyme activity. What should she measure as her dependent variable? t5 duration stimulus voltage Frest air temperature

Expert Solution
Step 1: Introduction
Sarcoplasmic reticulum is a cell organelle in muscle cells that is equivalent to that of the endoplasmic reticulum of other cells. Sarcoplasmic reticulum is used to store calcium ions which are required for muscle contraction. Release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum through calcium pump (Ca 2+ ATPase) into the cytoplasm of muscle cells activates actin and myosin filaments of muscle. This aids in the contraction of muscle fibers. This mechanism is also accompanied by an electric signal which causes a twitch in the muscle fiber.
