The contraction of the muscles can be explained by the sliding filament theory or formation of the cross-bridge cycle. Muscle fibers are made up of two protein filaments known as Myosin filaments and actin filaments. Actin filaments are attached to structures that look like the alphabet Z and the structures are called Z lines, the regions between two Z lines are called a sarcomere. The Myosin filaments have small structures called cross bridges that can attach to actin filaments almost appearing like a myosin head.
