Numerical abnormality refers to increase or decrease in the number of chromosomes in a cell. It can be found in somatic or germ cells.

Structural abnormality refers to alteration in the structure of chromosomes. It includes deletion (a segment from a chromosome is missing), inversion (a segment of chromosome is broken and gets reattached to same chromosome but with inverted arrangement of genes), duplication (a segment of chromosome gets duplicated), translocation ( a segment of chromosome is translocated from one chromosome to another) and insertion (a segment of chromosome is broken and gets attached to other chromosome)
