Step 1: Action Potential

Electrical signals are how neurons communicate. Electrical signals are generated when there is a potential difference. AP describes how the potential difference is created

Resting potential is the membrane potential when the neurons are not sending electrical signals, that is, they are at rest. The inside of the cell is negative relative to the outside of the cell. Resting potential is about -70 mV

The action potential is when the neuron sends a signal down the axon, away from the body.  A stimulus causes the resting potential to move towards 0 mV. When depolarization reaches the threshold (~ -55 mV), the neurons fire an action potential.
