2. David has ichthyosis, which is an X-linked recessive skin condition that is caused by a deficiency of the
enzyme steroid sulfatase. The deficiency disrupts cholesterol sulfate metabolism; cholesterol sulfate plays a
role in maintaining skin integrity. The normal shedding of dead skin cells is inhibited, and skin cells build
up and clump into scales. The application of skin softening creams, lotions and other topical treatments
lessens the severity of symptoms.
David's partner Sofia is the daughter of David's maternal aunt. David and Sofia have two sons, Diego and
Daniel, and one daughter, Isabella, all of whom have ichthyosis. They also have two unaffected daughters,
Mia and Camila. David's maternal grandfather, Dylan, is also affected by ichthyosis.
2a. Based on the family described above, draw a pedigree indicating individual names, biological sex
(square or circle), affected/unaffected (shaded/unshaded), and relationship connections. If the individual in
the pedigree has not been specifically mentioned to have ichthyosis, assume they do not have the condition.
2b. Describe how the pedigree you drew is consistent with X-linked recessive inheritance? Explain your
answer by providing at least TWO pieces of evidence taken from the pedigree.
