2. What is the mean arterial pressure if the diastolic pressure is 60 and the systolic pressure is 105 mm Hg?
Blood Pressure:
It is the pressure of blood against the blood vessels when blood is circulating. Since the heart is the pump that makes the blood circulate, it is responsible for the creation of pressure. Therefore, measuring blood pressure indicates if the heart is pumping normally, below normal or under undue stress (high pressure). It is recorded as a set of two readings, systolic pressure and diastolic pressure.
Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP):
Contraction of ventricles is known as systole. The maximum pressure created during systole is called the systolic pressure.
Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP):
When the contraction is over and the heart is at rest, the atrium gets filled. The blood pressure during this resting period of cardiac cycle is called the diastolic pressure.
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP):
It is a measure of average (mean) blood pressure of an individual during one cardiac cycle. The cardiac cycle consists of Diastole and Systole. It has a normal range of 70 - 100 mm of Hg.
