Expert Solution
Step 1: Introduction to blood pressure measurement
- Blood pressure is defined as the pressure exerted by the flow of blood on the walls of the arteries while flowing through them.
- Blood pressure is measured through a device known as spigmomanometer.
- The brachial artery of upper limb is usually chosen to measure blood pressure.
- An inflatable cuff wraps around the cubital fossa. A stethoscope is placed on the brachial artery that passes through the cubital fossa.
- The cuff is inflated and then deflated slowly.
- When deflating the first sound that appears through the stethoscope is the systolic blood pressure.
- While deflating further the sound again disappears and then appears again. This is diastolic blood pressure.
- The sounds heard during auscultation while measuring blood pressure are known as the korotkoff sounds.
