a. Procedure
This experiment is designed to demonstrate the principles of osmosis with living
plant tissues. Using a corkborer, bore two equal-sized cylinders of freshly cut raw
potato. Feel them and note the degree of firmness. Place one potato piece in a culture
dish containing enough five percent salt solution to cover the potato completely.
Place the second potato piece in a culture dish containing the same amount of
distilled water. After about 20 minutes, examine both pieces of potato and note any
changes in their degree of firmness.
