Expert Solution
Step 1

Alkyl halides are also known as haloalkanes. Alkyl halides are compounds in which one or more hydrogen atoms in an alkane have been replaced by halogen atoms (fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine).

E2 is a single step elimination, with a single transition state. It is typically undergone by primary substituted alkyl halides, but is possible with some secondary alkyl halides and other compounds. The reaction rate is second order, because it's influenced by both the alkyl halide and the base (bimolecular).

E2 reaction is favoured because it is easier for the bulky base to access the protons that are not hindered by other carbons. And because the protons of the methyl groups are more accessible than the protons of the CH2 group, the less substituted alkene forms faster and is the major product in this case.
