Question

List the alkyl halides in order of decreasing reactivity towards the Sn2 reaction.

SN2 Reaction Conditions:
Label a series of 8 clean and dry test tubes. To each test tube add 2.0 mL of a 15% Nal/acetone solution.
Now add 4 drops of each alkyl halide, one halide per test tube. Immediately cork and shake each test
tub e after the addition of the alkyl halide, and note the time. Record the time necessary for any
precipitate or cloudiness to form in each test tube. After 5 minutes, place any test tubes that do not
contain a precipitate in a 50°C water bath. Loosen the cork before heating. After about 2 minutes of
heating, allow the test tubes to cool to room temperature and note whether any cloudiness or
precipitate is present.
