Every individual in society occupies a particular status in society. This status is both achieved and ascribed. For example sex, caste, and gender are all ascribed statuses that an individual gets at birth, while occupation, class, etc are achieved statuses. Social mobility occurs when there is a shift in the status of an individual. Social mobility is generally of two types, vertical and horizontal mobility. Horizontal mobility is the change in the status in the same category. For example, a teacher who leaves one school and joins another. Vertical mobility on the other involves a change in the status of the individual. For example, a teacher leaves a school as she has become a Principal of another school.
