age” and “front s
What are the “back stage” and “front stage” areas of your life?
The most important work on self in symbolic interactionism is "Presentation of Self in Everyday Life". In order to maintain a stable self-image, people perform for their audiences. Goffman focuses on dramaturgy i.e. a view of social life as a series of dramatic performances akin to those performed on the stage. In consonance with his theoretical analogy, Goffman spoke of a front stage. The front is that part of the performance that generally functions in fixed and general ways to define the situation for those who observe the performance. On the front stage, we are never our real selves. We try to impress others through our performances. But in the back stage, we are completely our real selves as we do not have to perform for others and impress others.
