LAB 10 – (Turn in this sheet next lab – Sheet 1) Name ____ _______ Lab____10________ Rationale: Lab 10 is designed to allow students to do some basic descriptive analysis of data and provide explanation to the findings. This lab will facilitate the later research data analysis for your research experience and paper. All analysis will take place using the Sample data that is posted in the lab folder on CANVAS. You will open this EXCEL file and use this data to complete the following to fulfill the requirements for the lab. 1. Calculate the Mean, median, and standard deviation for BMI for this group of participants in the data set. a. Mean : ___25.3_____ b. Median: ____25____ c. Standard Deviation: __ 4.74126479_______ d. Describe the participants based on these scores. How would you generally classify this sample based on BMI. With the median being 25, and then evaluating a BMI chart, really anything between 25-29 is considered overweight but not exactly obese. However, this wouldn’t accommodate the possibility of the select few participants that may fall into the obese category. 2. Calculate the Mean and Standard Deviation of this sample for cholesterol score. a. Mean: _____160.68_____ Standard Deviation: _ 49.2885879 b. Do these descriptive values for cholesterol seem logical to you based on the BMI values calculated in problem 1? How would you expect BMI and cholesterol to be related and why do you believe this concept? I would believe that lower cholesterol would be linked to a lower or average BMI, the higher the BMI or more out of range the BMI the higher cholesterol. I believe this concept because we have associated higher cholesterol with obesity which is correlated to a high or above average BMI.

Select a part of this sample based on some categorical variable (Gender, Smoking behavior, Age- determine some cut point to separate data, BMI- compare based on normal versus overweight). Within this narrowed sample, choose 3 other variables and calculate the mean and standard deviation for these three variables. For this you will need to sort the data and select specific cases that fit your categorical criteria. An example would be to calculate resting heart rate, stress, and depression scores on just males. A potential research problem with this group might be: An examination of the relationship between stress, depression, and resting heart rate in males. What categorical variable are you using? _____gender- females Why did you choose this category? I wanted to see the stats of the three variables without the selection of smokers or non smokers What would be a potential research problem that might utilize these data? How do the total minutes of activity affect females' cholesterol and resting heart rate? Variable 1: __total minutes of activity _ Mean: __51.4_____ Standard Deviation: 32.2593656 Variable 2: __Cholesterol____Mean:__168.24______ Standard Deviation: _ 47.2813212 Variable 3: ___resting heart rate_____Mean:____71.76____ Standard Deviation:_ 9.35093578
