As a researcher, you want to know information about the socio demographic characteristic of GSS respondents. In order to answer this question, you should use these variables in GSS: Respondent’s sex ( sex ), Respondent’s education ( educ ), Respondent’s perceived health ( health ), and Respondent’s marital status ( marital ) Use SPSS to create frequency distributions for all 4 of these variables, then use the information from those frequency distribution to fill out an excel table for frequency distributions for each variable. Then, calculate the best measure of central tendency and measure of dispersion for each variable. For interval variables, you should calculate mean and standard deviation. For ordinal level variables, you should calculate median and inter-quartile range (be sure to interpret it in context). For nominal level variables, you should calculate mode and distributional variation (which must be calculated by hand). Use these values to fill out one comprehensive descriptive statistics table. Based upon this data, answer and thoroughly interpret the following question: What do the major sociodemographic characteristics of respondents for the 2012 GSS look like? Respondent Sex: Nominal Mode:The mode of this set is 2/female. The mode tells us what the most common answer to the survey question is. 1088 answers were female while 886 answers were male. The most common answer was female. Distributional variation: 0.1032<0.3 This data is evenly distributed according to the distributional variation. Gender Frequency Male 886 Female 1088 Total 1974
Respondet Education: Ordinal Median: The median of this set is 13, this tells us that the middle of the data is 13 years of schooling. Inter quartile range: The interquartile range is 12-16. This tells us that the middle 50 percent of the data includes 12 through 16 years of education.

total 1972 Respondent Marital Status: Nominal Marital Status Frequency Married 900 Widowed 163 Divorced 317 Separated 68 Never Married 526 Total 1974 Mode: The mode in this data set is 1/married. This tells us that survey takers answered that they were married most often. “Married" was the most common answer given to the survey question. Distributional Variation:
Respondent Health Status: Ordinal Health Status Frequency Excellent 350 Good 598 Fair 275 Poor 83 Total 1306
Median: The reported Median is 2, meaning that the middle of the data set is “good”. Thai shows that the center of the data shows that people consider their health status good, rather than excellent, fair, or poor. InterQuartile Range: The 25 percentile is 1.00 and 75 percentile is 3. This makes the interquartile range 1-3. The interquartile range tells us the middle 50 percent of the data. Specific for this question that means the center 50 percent of the data is spread between excellent, good, and fair. This tell us that poor health is not part of the middle of the data as it is not as prevalent. What do the major sociodemographic characteristics of respondents for the 2012 GSS look like? Based on the survey information and analysis there are many conclusions that we can make about the group of people being surveyed. The first thing we can see is that within this population there are more females who are surveyed. We know this because the model was female which tells us that this is the most reported answer of the question, what is your sex? Next we can look at the participants' education. After asking how many years each participant had gone to school the calculated median was 13, however, the IQR is 12-16 so, the center fifty percent of the data falls within this range. The mode of the marital status was “married”, this tells us that the most common answer to that question was married. The majority of the participants are married. The last area that we focused on was health status. The median of this data was “good” showing that the middle answer was good health status. The IQR was 1-3 showing us that The middle fifty percent of the data was spread over excellent, good and fair.
