4-2 Short Paper: Confidence Intervals Part I: For estimate, pi = 0.44, 95% CI: (0.37, 0.51) The population that this sample was selected from adolescent with asthma and their healthcare providers in North Carolina. It specifically included the adolescent patients ages 11-17 years and their caregivers who agreed to participate in the study and the forty-six medical professionals from four pediatric practices in North Carolina. Two rural clinics and two suburban clinics were included in the sample as well. The research question that can be answered by the confidence interval (CI): What percentage of adolescents with asthma who participated in the intervention group who watched a video and answered a questionnaire versus those who received standard of care (control group) during their visits, talked about tobacco smoking? The 44% of adolescents in the intervention group who visited their doctors and discussed smoking during the visit, whether it was brought up by the adolescent or the provider are the population parameter being estimated. The margin of error for the confidence interval is .07 (0.51-0.37= 0.14/2= .07) The CI demonstrates that the population parameter, with a small margin of error and standard error, which falls within that interval. With a 95% confidence interval of 37-51%, a margin of error of .07 and a standard error of 0.35, the parameter is 44% of the adolescents. It is difficult to determine whether watching the video and answering a questionnaire about asthma had any bearing on their decision to discuss smoking tobacco or not. To have a more reliable result, more sample studies with larger sample sizes would need to be conducted.

4-2 Short Paper: Confidence Intervals Part II: For estimate, pi – pc = 0.44 -0.32 = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.22) The research question that can be answered by the confidence interval (CI): Did watching the video and completing the asthma questionnaire affect the outcome of discussing tobacco smoking at the adolescents visit with their provider? The population parameter measures whether, watching a video and answering a questionnaire had an impact on the outcome among the adolescents who took part in this study from the intervention group and the control group, who talked to their provider about smoking during their visits. The margin of error for the confidence interval is 0.1 (0.22-0.02=0.2/2=0.1) which exceeds the confidence intervals' margin of error for each individual group. Interpret the CI : The 95% confidence interval shows that the population parameter for the difference between the two groups is .12 and fell between the interval of .02,.22. Comparing the two groups' confidence intervals reveals that participating in the intervention, viewing the video, and answering the questionnaire did affect how often the adolescent's healthcare provider mentioned smoking during the visits.
