Descriptive Statistics Michael A. Rush, MBA Capella University Professor 1
Descriptive Statistics Section 1   Section 1 shows two different histograms that represent student scores which are classified into several ranges. The height of each bar represents the count based on the final. The histogram helps to clarify the information and shows the result of what’s being measured; in this case the above histogram shows the final exam scores.   Section 2   The Mean or average is the most used method of describing central tendency (Trochim, 2023). The data set presented shows GPA (M = 2.862) and Quiz 3 (M = 7.133).   2
The standard deviation is a more accurate and detailed estimate of dispersion because an outlier can greatly exaggerate the range, and it shows the relation that a set of scores has to the Mean of the sample (Trochim, 2023). For GPA (SD = 0.713), and for Quiz 3, (SD = 1.600).   The skewness is the measure of the frequency distribution of the set of data, and kurtosis is a measure of the combined weight of the tails in relation to the rest of the distribution (“Quality Advisor,” 2023). The skewness for GPA is -0.220 while the standard error is 0.236; for Quiz 3, it is -0.078, and the standard error is 0.236.   The kurtosis for GPA is -0.688 with a standard error of 0.467, and for Quiz 3, it is 0.149 with a standard error of 0.467. The specified range quoted in the study guide for skew and kurtosis values is -1 to +1, and the data given in the study are considered ideal for normality for each distribution.  3
