2 Abstract This comprehensive study examines a selection of diverse universities, scrutinizing their respective student support services, as well as retention and graduation rates. Notably, the University of Florida demonstrates a strong commitment to student success, offering an extensive range of co-curricular support services, particularly in academic advising and mental health counseling. Ultimately, an effective student success and retention program encompasses comprehensive academic advising, academic support services, and robust mental health and counseling resources that foster a supportive community and facilitate a seamless transition into university life. Prioritizing the tracking and support of student progress, especially in community college settings, is also advised. Online institutions should focus on tailored support for their unique demographic, considering the specific challenges faced by online learners. By integrating these strategies, universities have the potential to elevate student success and contribute to higher retention and graduation rates universally.

According to Business Wire, The Higher Learning Commission through the Student Success Academy Team is responsible for increasing student retention and was established last year. (https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220808005740/en/Universit y-of-Phoenix-successfully-completes-inaugural-Student-Success- Academy-of-the-Higher-Learning-Commission) Summary When examining the selected universities and their respective student support services alongside their student retention and graduation rates, distinctive patterns and distinctions come to light. The University of Florida is notably committed to student success, offering a wide range of co-curricular support services that encompass academic advising and mental health counseling. One noteworthy program, UF Promise, is designed for first-year students to establish a supportive community and foster early connections. This initiative aligns with the university's
12 high retention and graduation rates, which stand at 97% and 90% respectively ( College Navigator - University of Florida , n.d.). Yale University stands out for its exceptionally high retention and graduation rates, which are 98% and 96% respectively ( College Navigator – Yale University , n.d.). The Poorvu Center for Teaching & Learning provides an extensive array of resources catering to diverse student needs. Notably, programs like First-Year Counselors underscore the institution's dedication to facilitating a smooth transition for incoming students. Brigham Young University emphasizes the significance of the first-year experience through the Office of First-Year Experience, which offers peer mentorship and orientation activities. While the reported retention and graduation rates, 90% and 79% respectively, indicate a steady commitment to student success, they are slightly lower compared to some other institutions ( College Navigator - Brigham Young University , n.d.). Florida A&M University offers various services through the Undergraduate Student Success Center and other departments. However, the reported graduation rate of 60% is notably lower compared to some peers, indicating a potential need for additional strategies to enhance student retention and progression ( College Navigator – Florida A & M University , n.d.). As a community college, South Florida State College plays a crucial role in providing essential support services like advising, tutoring, and library resources. The absence of reported freshman retention data suggests an area for improvement in tracking and supporting student progress. However, the six-year graduation rate is reported at 56% ( College Navigator – South Florida State College , n.d.). The University of Phoenix faces unique challenges as an online, for-profit institution. While offering a range of resources including academic support and recognized student organizations, their retention and graduation rates are significantly lower compared to traditional universities, standing at 42% and 18% respectively

13 ( College Navigator – University of Phoenix , n.d.). This may reflect the diverse demographic of their student body and the specific challenges faced by online learners. The examination of these diverse universities and their respective support services reveals a range of approaches to student success. Each institution has its strengths and areas for improvement. To offer an ideal array of services, it is recommended that universities consider a multi-faceted approach. This should include comprehensive academic advising, robust mental health and counseling resources, and targeted programs like UF Promise and First-Year Counselors, which have demonstrated effectiveness in fostering a supportive community and aiding in the transition to university life ( Office of Academic Support - University of Florida , n.d.). Additionally, tracking and supporting student progress, particularly in the case of community colleges, should be prioritized. Further, online institutions like the University of Phoenix should focus on tailored support for their unique demographic, and considering the specific challenges faced by online learners. By combining these strategies, universities can enhance student success and contribute to higher retention and graduation rates across the board. References Brigham Young University . (2017).
