Module Four Assignment 2 Introduction Human trafficking is a global issue that violates the fundamental principles of human dignity and rights. As defined by the Department of Justice, human trafficking is “a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person to provide labor or services, or to engage in commercial sex acts. Coercion can be subtle or overt, physical or psychological. Exploitation of a minor for commercial sex is human trafficking, regardless of whether any form of force, fraud, or coercion was used.” Explanation of Data According to Polaris, “From 1/1/2021 - 12/31/2021, there were 10,359 trafficking situations reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Out of those situations, a total of 16,554 likely victims of trafficking were identified. The top three types of trafficking reported in 2021 were Escort Services (10%), Pornography (8%), and Illicit Massage, Health & Beauty (8%)” (2021) Data from Polaris also reported that victims of trafficking are usually trafficked by someone that they know, 33% of the time it was a parent or caregiver, 28% of the time it was an intimate partner, and 22% of the time it was by an employer, and the internet was found to be the most popular place victims were trafficked. (2021) According to Polaris, human trafficking is displayed in various forms from labor to sex slavery. Compared to the data found in 2020, there has been a small decrease in the number of situations (10,524 compared to 10,359) However, there was a slight increase in the number of unique victims (16,610 compared to 16,554) (2021) Data from Polaris also shows us that women are more likely to find themselves victims of human trafficking compared to men, especially in the form of sex, in 2021, 79% of reported sex trafficking cases were women compared to &% that men reported. (2021)
Module Four Assignment 3 Risk Factors Many different factors can place someone at a higher risk of experiencing trafficking. According to the Human Trafficking Hotline operated by Polaris, some factors that can place someone at higher risk would be “recent migration or relocation, substance use, mental health concerns, involvement with the children's welfare system, and being a runaway or homeless youth. Often, traffickers identify and leverage their victims' vulnerabilities to create dependency.” (2024) Abusers and traffickers will use many tactics to control and manipulate their victims such as physical and emotional abuse and threats, isolation from friends and family, and economic abuse. They make promises to address their target's needs to impose control. ( Human trafficking, 2024) What’s most interesting from the data from Polaris is that most people think that abduction is the highest form of abuse or trafficking but in 2020 only 6% of reported cases were abduction compared to 28% which were familiar cases (someone the victim knew.) (2021) Abusers look for victims who are vulnerable in some way and they capitalize on that in order to control and manipulate their victims.
