Data Gathering Homework Exercises
Homework Data Gathering Exercises:
Self-Awareness
Goal: During these first weeks of the semester, you will engage in two different data
gathering exercises. Our goal is to learn more about where you came from by studying your hometown/area in demographic and statistical way. International students, or students who have moved should meet with me prior to gathering data
so we can choose the most appropriate location for you to study and identify a data source, if needed. I will work with international students to adapt this assignment to meet our learning goals.
Process: There are two dates for this assignment. You should have a draft of your first set of data in class on
Sept. 15
th
that is ready to be shared with your group and which can be included in your group’s journal entry. Every student will each submit a final written summary of all of their data
on Sept. 29
th
.
Final Written Product: Include three parts in the final written summary that you submit for grading: 1) All of the statistics you were able to find (demographic and school data); 2) Citations for each source you used to find them; and 3) Two brief reflections about
your personal observations about the data (one for Part 1 and one for Part 2). Which data surprised you? Which did not? Why? What’s one question that has arisen for you as a result of this work? (PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to find every statistic listed in these charts as smaller towns, for example, may not report them. Make sure to provide
enough data to offer a general sense of the economic and racial composition of your town. Do not use .com websites!!)

Part 1: Social and Economic Conditions in [Your Hometown]
1
Draft Data due in class September 15
th
This homework is designed to help you collect data on the core demographic features in your hometown and another town in your area. What are the major economic and social characteristics of the families who live in these towns? STEP 1: Write one paragraph that names your hometown, the comparison town and the reason(s) you chose it. If you wish, you can make note of what you expect to find.
STEP 2:
Collect data on the living wage at this website: https://livingwage.mit.edu
Log into the website, click on your State's name, and then click on "Show results for [Your State] as a whole." Choose a family size you want to study (e.g., 2 working parents and 2 children) and then record: 1) the living wage; 2) the poverty wage; and 3) the minimum wage for the family size you chose. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see “Typical Expenses.” Record the "required annual income, before taxes," your family size needs to meet its expenses. Now, go back to the main page and choose your county and review the same statistics as above. Are your county numbers different than those in the state overall?
STEP 3:
Next, we’ll gather some basic population data and basic economic statistics using the census data. Google "[Your Town State] Census Quick Facts." Record your town's population, then scroll down and record the following statistics for your town: 1) %’s of each major racial group; 2)% foreign born persons; 3) the median gross rent; 4) median value of owner-occupied housing units; 5) % homes where a foreign language is spoken; 6) % of homes with broadband internet; 7) %'s of high school and college graduates; 8) % without health insurance; and 9) the median family and per capita incomes for your town; and finally 10) % living in poverty. Now, google: “census data” and click “Explore Census data.” In the box that appears at the top of the screen, type “Income [Your Town] median annual income.” Click on the table “Income in the Past Twelve Months” and record the percentage of families in each income group. Repeat these steps for your comparison town.
Write a brief reflection about your thinking and observations as you compared the two towns: e.g., How does the living wage in your county compare to the state? Where is there more poverty? More racial diversity? What might someone conclude about you based on your hometown data? Possible links for international data are included in Module #3.
On Weds., September 15
th
, please bring to class: 1) two core facts (with citation) and 2) your reflection. Each group will record a journal entry on that day that will use these facts and will count towards your participation grade
. This homework should take approximately an 1-2 hours to complete. Reach out to me if you are struggling. Use the table on the next page to organize and record your data if it is helpful. 2

*PLEASE NOTE: It would be ideal to have all of these statistics, but this may not be
possible for your town. Do your best to get data that describe economic and ethnic/racial
composition in your hometown and the cost of living. Don’t forget to add a reflection!

Part 2: Educational Opportunities in Your Region
Draft Data due in class October 6
th
Goal: Your goal in this second data gathering assignment is to determine whether there are differences in the educational experiences either within your hometown (e.g., does it matter which school you go to in Hamden?) or in two different towns (e.g., is schooling better in Hamden or Meriden?) You will need to compare either two different schools or school systems
for this exercise. Your choice will be based on where you live.
The Assignment. You will need to find the database for your state’s educational statistics. I have listed some starting points below. Make sure you are using a .gov or .edu site to get your data
, or ask me about the site you are using. Some of the most useful data for comparison include: 1) HS graduation rates; 2) % who receive reduced or free lunch; 3) chronic absenteeism and/or suspension rates; 4) racial composition of the school population (i.e., % of whites, blacks, Hispanics, etc.; 5) % of disabled students; 6) % of students that perform at grade level on standardized math, reading tests; and 7) % of students who attend college. If you went to private school, many of these statistics will not be available but you can review your town statistics and discuss any differences you perceive (e.g., in racial composition) between public and private. As with the first data assignment, record the data and some thoughts about what you observe in the two towns. Bring two pieces of data and your reflection to class on September 29
th
. Below is an example of how to cite the data
and a list of some websites where data are available. Possibilities for international data should be discussed one-on-one with Professor Hudd.
