Nathan Upton Chapter 2 Questions 1. Determine whether the Race/Ethnicity variable is categorical or continuous. How do you know? Calculate the appropriate summary statistic(s) and create an appropriate data visualization to describe the variable. Race/Ethnicity is a categorical variable because it does not contain any inherent numeric values and they do not have any inherent order. We are able to count how many people are of a certain race, however we cannot say that one race is a higher numeric value than the other. 2. Determine whether the Engagement variable is categorical or continuous. How do you know? Calculate the appropriate summary statistic(s) and create an appropriate data visualization to describe the variable. Engagement is a continuous variable because it contains inherent numeric values and they can be put in order. We are able to organize the data and we can say that one variable is higher in numeric value than the other. 3. Determine whether the Base Pay variable is categorical or continuous. How do you know? Calculate the appropriate summary statistic(s) and create an appropriate data visualization to describe the variable. Base Pay is a continuous variable because it contains inherent numeric values, and they can be put in order. We are able to organize the data and we can say that one variable is higher in numeric value than the other.
